President’s Welcome
Happy Spring! GASPEN kicked off the year 2023 in the right direction. We are ready for another great year!
We continue collaborating with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) to provide monthly nutrition support WebEx events covering pediatric and adult nutrition topics. There are 10 Nutrition Support Colloquiums and 4 Nutrition Core Lectures scheduled for 2023. All the WebEx event details are available on our website, www.GASPEN.org/events.
The GASPEN board has been planning for our 2023 Annual Hybrid Conference scheduled on Friday, August 25, 2023, at the Emory Conference Center Hotel, which conference rooms are newly renovated. We have a great lineup of speakers, including two past ASPEN past presidents, Lingtak-Neander Chan, PharmD, BCNSP, FCCP, FACN, FASPEN, and Gail Cresci, Ph.D., RD, LD, FASPEN. All conference details can be found on our website, and registration is NOW OPEN. Early bird registration is available until July 13th.
We are pleased to announce that GASPEN is organizing a president-elect election this year. Additional information and deadlines can be found in this newsletter. We also call on all residents, fellows, interns, and nutrition support practitioners to submit a poster for our GASPEN 2023 conference. All posters will be showcased during our annual conference and on our GASPEN YouTube channel. For more information, please email us at GASPENGA@gmail.com.
We are working on a membership engagement survey to help us improve our chapter and grow our membership. So please be on the lookout for more information and complete the survey. We continue to enhance our website, www.GASPEN.org, where you can access all GASPEN-related information, such as Newsletters and recorded presentations from past events. Alex Ivanov, PharmD, MS, RD, BCNSP, CNSC
Alex Ivanov has been a GASPEN board member since 2019 and is a pharmacy specialist in nutrition support at Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital. Alex has also served on ASPEN’s Clinical Practice Committee since 2021. Alex was recently selected by the Board of Pharmaceutic Specialties (BPS) to serve as a job analysis panelist for the Nutrition Support Pharmacy (BCNSP) certification examination to engage in discussions over sessions to develop the BCNSP exam content outline. Congratulations on your achievement and for your continued contributions to nutrition support!
Rachel Leong, PharmD
Rachel Leong is completing her two-year nutrition support pharmacy fellowship program at Emory University Hospital. In April 2023, Rachel received ASPEN’s New Practitioner Award in the Pharmacy Practice Section for her abstract, which was presented at ASPEN’s Nutrition Science and Practice Conference in Las Vegas. Congratulations on your presentation and your award, and we look forward to your continued contributions to the field of nutrition support!
Vivian Zhao, PharmD, BCNSP, FASPEN
Vivian Zhao has been GASPEN president since 2020 and on the GASPEN board since 2016. Vivian has also served as the ASPEN’s Drug-Nutrient Interaction Section member and newsletter editor. Currently, Vivian serves on the Nutrition Support Pharmacy Specialty Council of the BPS and was selected by BPS as a job analysis panelist for the BCNSP exam content outline. Vivian has been the director of Emory University Hospital’s nutrition support pharmacy fellowship program since its inception in 2021. In April 2023, Vivian received ASPEN’s Excellence in Nutrition Support Education Award for her many contributions to nutrition support education. Congratulations on your continued accomplishments and your excellent leadership of GASPEN!
Emory University Hospital Nutrition Support Team
The Emory University Hospital Nutrition Support and Metabolic Support Service was one of six clinical nutrition teams to receive the 2023 ASPEN’s Clinical Nutrition Team of Distinction Award. This award recognizes excellence in interdisciplinary clinical nutrition practice in institutions or agencies that provide nutrition support and have demonstrated the highest level of care to their patients. This is the second time the Emory team received such an award. Congratulations to the Emory team for your continued excellent patient care!
